Learn to ski in Cervinia

Located in the Italian Alps at an altitude of 2,050m, Breuil-Cervinia is a c.a. 1hr 45mins drive from Turin and 2,5hrs from Milan Malpensa. The resort has 200km pistes at all levels and is Italy’s most snow-sure, lying in the shadow of the Monte Cervino mountain - known by most as the Matterhorn. The resort opened in 1936 under the name Breuil. However, in the 1940’s it was decreed that the name should be changed to Breuil-Cervinia, in honour of the Italian mountain ranging above it.

Breuil-Cervinia’s high altitude means that snow is virtually guaranteed from November to May. It is also part of the Breuil-Cervinia Valtournenche Zermatt skiing region, which is one of the largest in the Alps. This extensive ski domain has a total of 360km of pistes and stretches across three valleys within Italy and Switzerland, the skiing area ranging in altitude from 1,524m at Valtournenche to 3,883m at the Piccolo Cervino.

Ski lessons for beginners in Cervinia

Breuil-Cervinia is definitely one of the best places in Europe to learn to ski, with excellent nursery slopes and 18 groomed beginner runs. Also, it is no secret that the red runs within the resort are so gentle that they would be classified as blue elsewhere.

Ski schools in Cervinia offer ski lessons from age 5yrs upwards, lessons lasting for 2,5hrs and the meeting point being at the top of the Plan Maison lift. Beginners are firstly taught the very basic moves of glide and the snowplough, to help them get used to their equipment.

The next step is to progress to some of the gentler slopes within the resort to practice longer glides and eventually try the first parallel turns. The main beginners area within Cervinia is at Plan Maison, which has various easy blues, plus a meandering green that traverses the mountain from Laghi Cime Bianche.

Slightly higher up, various reds meander down from Theodulpass - this being a further recommendation of the ski schools in Cervinia. Theodulpass is reached by taking a succession of ski lifts up from Plan Maison.

Kids’ ski lessons in Cervinia

Kids’ ski lessons in Cervinia are available for young skiers aged 5yrs and above. Ski novices are taken to the nursery and beginner slopes with magic carpets around the Plan Maison lift. The meeting point for the ski schools in Cervinia is directly by the top station of the lift. Here, first-time skiers learn their first moves on the snow; gliding and the snowplough.

Once basics have been established, beginners graduate onto slopes with more of a gradient. Around the Plan Maison area are plenty of gentle blue runs, the blue 5 run making a right-angle turn midway before leading back down to Breuil-Cervinia.

Advanced beginners practice their newly-learned technique on the slopes around the Campetto chairlift or in Plan Maison at the pommel lift and chairlift. The 11km Ventina red run is a skiing highlight and recommended by the ski schools in Cervinia as the ultimate goal for intermediate skiers.

How do we find our appropriate experience level?

Next to the menu item "Experience level" you will find a description of the individual experience levels. If you're still not sure, you don't need to worry. At what age can children ski or snowboard?

There is no fixed age limit here. Supported by specially trained children's ski instructors, children can already learn to ski playfully at kindergarten age. Occasionally there are children who can already learn to ski at the age of 3 1/2 years.

How many days should the lessons last for our children?

During the holiday weeks, children's ski courses for beginners usually start on Sunday or Monday. The program is designed in such a way that the best learning results are achieved when your children take part in the ski course throughout the week. So they don't miss the final event (race, etc.) and experience a great week with their group. For advanced children the learning success usually kicks in on the third day.

Is it better to put our child in a group lesson or a private tuition?

The group lessons are generally recommended for beginners. Learning together with peers is more fun. The children are not constantly in the focus and have the possibility to catch their breath between the individual exercises, while the other children are on it. In order not to underchallenge highly talented children, a private ski instructor is recommended.

Can we join our child with a private instructor?

Yes, that's possible. Some providers even offer special family offers. Otherwise, you can simply book a private instructor for children or adults and inform the ski school after booking that you would like to go together.
