"Our kids 5 and 7 had a wonderful time. It was their first time on skis and they enjoyed it so much. They went happily to their course every day (6 in total) and were super proud when they received their medal and recommendation to move to the next course at the end. The teachers were very attentive and patient. We would definitely comeback again. Thank you Famille de La Plaine"

Learn to ski in Verbier

Located at an altitude of 1500m in the French-speaking Swiss canton of Valais and around 2hrs drive from Geneva and Bern, Verbier is one of the 6 ski resorts - Verbier, Bruson, La Tzoumaz, Veysonnaz, Nendaz and Thyon - that together form the huge ski resort Les Quatre Vallées.

Les Quatre Vallées was founded in 1983, with the opening of the Mont Fort cable-car. The region covers nearly 100 lifts and more than 400km slopes, at altitudes between 1250m and 3330m at the peak of the Mont Fort glacier. The high altitudes and excellent terrain make for exceptional snow conditions and all-round enjoyable skiing.

Thanks to its nightlife and après ski programme, Verbier also has the reputation for being Switzerland's liveliest resort. With exceptional pistes and mountain scenery offering stunning views of the Mont Blanc and Combins Massif, it’s hardly surprising that Verbier is as a firm favourite amongst royalty and the rich & famous.

Ski lessons for beginners in Verbier

With three nursery areas situated close to the town centre, Verbier really is ideal for beginners. The resort offers ski lessons from age 3yrs, the youngest learners being taught their first skiing moves at the Kids Club, situated at the base station of the Moulins lift, in the centre of Verbier.

The three nursery areas offer slightly cheaper ski pass prices, the prices varying depending on the season. Lift passes for access to the magic carpets can be bought for a half day or a full day.

Children's lesson groups are determined by their age and ability, whilst adult lessons are determined by ability and interests. Beginners over the age of 5yrs have their first lessons at the beginner areas within the resort, most ski schools in Verbier heading for the largest beginner area, Les Esserts, which has short and gentle slopes, a drag lift & 2 magic carpets.

Beginners who are steady on their skis and have successfully mastered the glide and snowplough progress to the Le Rouge area, where the slopes are slightly more inclined, and eventually to the blue runs at La Chaux, further up the mountain. Here, the ski schools in Verbier work on confidence building whilst slowly introducing parallel turns to their novice skiers.

Advanced beginners looking to progress after having established the basics can buy a Verbier-only ski pass from as little as 4 hours, the pass giving access to 9 blue runs and 4 liason runs. The ski schools in Verbier will advise which is the best pass for the skier’s ability.

These slopes are very flat and ideal for little learners, with magic carpets and a drag lift.

Young learners who already have some skiing experience are taken to the beginner slopes with a gentle gradient at Le Rouge, or directly to the blue runs at La Chaux, further up the mountain. The La Chaux runs are easily accessed by the Médran, thanks to the recently-built La Chaux Express Combi-Mix lift, the runs no.1&2 being recommended as ideal blues for improving technique.

La Chaux is also the destination for the ski schools in Verbier with their young intermediate skiers; from here, a number of impressive red runs offer the chance to further technique with great views included. For intermediates wanting to practice closer to Verbier, the Savoleyres area offers various runs that can be accessed directly from the village.

How do we find group lessons or private instructors?

Private teachers are marked with the inscription "Private". You can search for private teachers by selecting the "Private" filter under the "Category" menu item.

How do we find offers in our language?

Under the menu item "Language" you can select a desired language. Afterwards only offers will be shown where this language is available.

When should we book?

During the holiday weeks, ski and snowboard courses are usually fully booked. In order to make sure that there is still a place available in the desired ski or snowboard course, the motto is: the sooner the better.

How do we find our appropriate experience level?

Next to the menu item "Experience level" you will find a description of the individual experience levels. If you're still not sure, you don't need to worry. Simply choose the experience level that best suits your abilities. Before the first lesson of a group course, ski schools will assess your abilities so that you can be placed in the right group. In any case, private instructors will take your abilities into account on an individual basis.

How do we find offers including equipment?

All offers including equipment are marked with the inscription "Ski rental included". If you find the inscription "Ski rental optional" you can book the equipment for this offer. You will find offers including equipment faster if you select the filter "Ski rental including" under the menu item "Popular options". Depending on the provider, an offer including equipment contains: skis, ski poles, ski boots and helmet. You will find a detailed list of the included rental items in the respective offer description.

In a ski resort there is almost without exception the possibility to rent winter sports equipment. If you book via CheckYeti, you will receive discounts from our partner Skiset, where you can conveniently reserve your equipment online.

How many participants are usually in a group?

This depends on the ski school. Some ski schools have a maximum number of participants per group. You can find this information in the descriptions of the offers.

At what age can children ski or snowboard?

There is no fixed age limit here. Supported by specially trained children's ski instructors, children can already learn to ski playfully at kindergarten age. Depending on the children's level of motoric and social development, the ideal starting age is between 4 and 5 years. Occasionally there are children who can already learn to ski at the age of 3 1/2 years.

How many days should the lessons last for our children?

During the holiday weeks, children's ski courses for beginners usually start on Sunday or Monday. The program is designed in such a way that the best learning results are achieved when your children take part in the ski course throughout the week. So they don't miss the final event (race, etc.) and experience a great week with their group. For advanced children the learning success usually kicks in on the third day.

Is it better to put our child in a group lesson or a private tuition?

The group lessons are generally recommended for beginners. Learning together with peers is more fun. The children are not constantly in the focus and have the possibility to catch their breath between the individual exercises, while the other children are on it. In order not to underchallenge highly talented children, a private ski instructor is recommended.

Can we join our child with a private instructor?

Yes, that's possible. Some providers even offer special family offers. Otherwise, you can simply book a private instructor for children or adults and inform the ski school after booking that you would like to go together.
