Learn to ski in Ischgl

The international ski resort of Ischgl is one of the most popular winter sports destinations in Austria. Located at an altitude of 1,337m in the Tyrolean Paznaun Valley, Ischgl is part of the Silvretta Arena Ischgl - Samnaun ski alliance, which extends into Switzerland and offers a total of 239km of slopes.

Thanks to its high altitude, the Silvretta Arena is one of the most snow sure ski regions within the whole of Austria. The season starts in November and officially ends at the beginning of May with the renowned Top of the Mountain concert.

Within Ischgl, the slopes are spread over three mountains; the Pardatschgrat (2624 m), the Idjoch (2760 m) and the Palinkopf (2864 m). The majority of the slopes lie at altitudes between 2000m - 2872m and three gondolas bring skiers directly from the village to the closest pistes at Pardatschgrat and Idjoch.

Ischgl can be reached in around 1,5hrs from Innsbruck and 3hrs from Münich.

Ski lessons for beginners in Ischgl

Ski schools in Ischgl offer ski lessons from age 3yrs. Group lessons for kids aged 6yrs and above last either 3 or 4hrs, depending on the ski school. Adult ski lessons last for 3hrs. The ski school meeting point for lessons is usually at the Idalp mountain station, which can be reached directly from the village with the Silvretta and Fimba cablecars.

Beginner lessons start with learning the basic skiing techniques of the glide and snowplough. These are taught on the flattest slopes within the resort, usually at the beginners area by the Idalp mountain station. Once the ski beginners feel secure with their first two moves, lessons progress to slopes with a slight incline. Here, the ski schools in Ischgl focus on improving the body position and gradually introducing the snowplough turn.

Beginners with some previous experience are taken for lessons directly to blue slopes. Firstly the basic techniques are refreshed before the parallel skiing technique is introduced. The ski schools in Ischgl recommend the blue run no. 2 for beginners who want to practice their newly-learned techniques after lessons.

For practice after lessons, the ski schools in Ischgl recommend the blue no.22 that heads down towards Ischgl from the Palinkopf at 2864m. The no.22 eventually joins with the no.23 run, making an enjoyably long route that ends down in Höllboden.

Occasionally there are children who can already learn to ski at the age of 3 1/2 years.

How many days should the lessons last for our children?

During the holiday weeks, children's ski courses for beginners usually start on Sunday or Monday. The program is designed in such a way that the best learning results are achieved when your children take part in the ski course throughout the week. So they don't miss the final event (race, etc.) and experience a great week with their group. For advanced children the learning success usually kicks in on the third day.

Is it better to put our child in a group lesson or a private tuition?

The group lessons are generally recommended for beginners. Learning together with peers is more fun. The children are not constantly in the focus and have the possibility to catch their breath between the individual exercises, while the other children are on it. In order not to underchallenge highly talented children, a private ski instructor is recommended.

Can we join our child with a private instructor?

Yes, that's possible. Some providers even offer special family offers. Otherwise, you can simply book a private instructor for children or adults and inform the ski school after booking that you would like to go together.
