Learn to ski in La Clusaz

La Clusaz is a small French mountain village with approximately 2000 inhabitants. It is located in the Haute-Savoie region, in the heart of the Aravis Range. For over 100 years now, La Clusaz has been attracting skiers from all over the world. Benefitting from advantageous snow conditions, the ski schools in La Clusaz can offer their lessons all year round.

From the resort, skiers have access to 4 mountains: Massif de Balme (2600m), Massif de l’Aiguille (2400m), Étale (2400m) and Plateau of Beauregard (1690m). The neighbouring mountain, Tête de Cabeau, also offers access to the slopes on the Col de Merdassier (1500m) and the Col de la Croix Fry (1467m), both being the main sectors of the small Manigod resort.

The departmental capital Annecy and its TGV train station are only a 30-minute car drive away from La Clusaz. Geneva’s airport is also only 1h away from the ski schools in La Clusaz which is ideal for international tourists. Once in La Clusaz, all resorts in the Aravis Range area - Manigod, Le Grand Bornand and Saint-Jean de Sixt - can be reached with shuttle buses.

Thanks to the numerous blue slopes covering all mountains around La Clusaz, beginners can discover the resort’s entirety. In fact, blue or easy slopes make up 53% of all local descents. An area covered in blue and green slopes, for example, can be found on the Plateau of Beauregard.

Children from the age of 4 can participate in ski lessons. The littlest skiers can discover all 3 kids’ areas and numerous kids’ clubs and have a great time there. Usually, the meeting point for lessons at ski schools in La Clusaz is the local ice skating rink which is right next to the Beauregard gondola.

In small groups of 5 to 8 participants, children learn basic skiing techniques like for instance the snow-plough. Once these are mastered, the little skiers are introduced to parallel turns before trying carving or off-piste skiing. Carving and off-piste skiing, however, are activities only experienced children can try out. During the whole lesson, the children are guided and helped by a professional and experienced instructor from one of the ski schools in La Clusaz.

Experienced kids and adults can discover the resort’s red slopes on the Massif de Balme and the Massif de l’Aiguille which not only offer superb pistes but also a breathtaking view dominated by the famous Mont Blanc.

There is no fixed age limit here. Supported by specially trained children's ski instructors, children can already learn to ski playfully at kindergarten age. Occasionally there are children who can already learn to ski at the age of 3 1/2 years.

How many days should the lessons last for our children?

During the holiday weeks, children's ski courses for beginners usually start on Sunday or Monday. The program is designed in such a way that the best learning results are achieved when your children take part in the ski course throughout the week. So they don't miss the final event (race, etc.) and experience a great week with their group. For advanced children the learning success usually kicks in on the third day.

Is it better to put our child in a group lesson or a private tuition?

The group lessons are generally recommended for beginners. Learning together with peers is more fun. The children are not constantly in the focus and have the possibility to catch their breath between the individual exercises, while the other children are on it. In order not to underchallenge highly talented children, a private ski instructor is recommended.

Can we join our child with a private instructor?

Yes, that's possible. Some providers even offer special family offers. Otherwise, you can simply book a private instructor for children or adults and inform the ski school after booking that you would like to go together.
