Ski Schools in Morzine

Learn to ski in Morzine

Situated close to the Swiss border in the Haute Savoie region of south-eastern France and just over an hour’s drive from Geneva, Morzine is a pretty and traditional town with wood & slate chalets. The resort lies at an altitude of 1000m, directly within the heart of the Portes du Soleil skiing region. With its neighbour Avoriaz, Morzine is one of the most northerly French Alpine resorts, both resorts benefitting from the glacial snow conditions of the nearby Mont Blanc.

The Portes du Soleil skiing region encompasses 12 resorts and offers a total of 650km of slopes. Within the region are three different sectors: Pleney, which, thanks to the numerous blue slopes, is the destination of all ski schools in Morzine for their beginner lessons; Nyon, the sector that offers the best runs for experienced skiers, and Chamossières.

Ski lessons for beginners in Morzine

Ski schools in Morzine welcome beginner skiers from 5yrs upwards, lessons lasting for 2-2,5hrs. Lesson groups have a maximum of 8 skiers and are divided according to age and experience level.

Ski novices are taught their very first technique basics on the two beginner slopes by the Pléney, which is higher up in Morzine. Many beginners use the higher green Plény run to practice the snowplough after lessons, this being accessed by the TS du Belvedere lift.

Beginners who have mastered the first moves graduate onto the blue pistes within the resort. Here, the Pléney is also ideal, having various excellent blue runs such as the Piste B, Piste C and Piste D, all of which head down towards the bottom of the Pléney télécabine. Ski schools in Morzine recommend Piste B as the ideal confidence builder, as the run is long, leisurely and doesn’t have any steep sections.

Advancing beginners head to Piste C and Piste G, which are accessed by the TS des Fys and TS d’Atray lifts. These runs have steeper gradients and are ideal for working on technique.

First-timer skiers are taken to the beginner slopes up at the Pléney, which has two green slopes, plus a children's zone where the very young skiers can practise. Ski schools in Morzine meet for their beginners’ lessons at the Pléney gondola, either directly at the base station or at the top station.

Ski novices start with the basic moves of glide and snowplough. Once these have been well-established, the group moves onto green and blue slopes that are more challenging and have a slight gradient.

Lessons for young intermediate skiers focus on parallel turns and improving posture. Whether the children are first-time skiers or have already advanced onto red or even black runs, the instructor takes the students to slopes according to their level to ensure further progress. Ski schools in Morzine have a medal presentation at the end of the week, so no matter whatever the level, every young skier finishes the week with a sense of achievement.

At what age can children ski or snowboard?

There is no fixed age limit here. Supported by specially trained children's ski instructors, children can already learn to ski playfully at kindergarten age. Occasionally there are children who can already learn to ski at the age of 3 1/2 years.

How many days should the lessons last for our children?

During the holiday weeks, children's ski courses for beginners usually start on Sunday or Monday. The program is designed in such a way that the best learning results are achieved when your children take part in the ski course throughout the week. So they don't miss the final event (race, etc.) and experience a great week with their group. For advanced children the learning success usually kicks in on the third day.

Is it better to put our child in a group lesson or a private tuition?

The group lessons are generally recommended for beginners. Learning together with peers is more fun. The children are not constantly in the focus and have the possibility to catch their breath between the individual exercises, while the other children are on it. In order not to underchallenge highly talented children, a private ski instructor is recommended.

Can we join our child with a private instructor?

Yes, that's possible. Some providers even offer special family offers. Otherwise, you can simply book a private instructor for children or adults and inform the ski school after booking that you would like to go together.
