Learn to ski in Livigno
Located high up in a remote valley, near the Swiss border and within the province of Lombardia, Livigno is around 3hrs drive from Innsbruck and around 3,5hrs drive from Milan Linate. Known as “The little Tibet of Europe”, Livigno has very heavy snowfalls, which ensure a very long skiing season, from the end of November until the beginning of May. Additionally, the resort has very modern snow-making facilities that can provide up to 80% snow coverage.
The ski area in Livigno is divided into two areas, Carosello 3000 and Mottolino, one on each side of the valley. The resort offers 115 km of slopes at heights up to 2.900m, with 29 blue, 37 red and 12 black runs. Additionally, a total of 4 excellent terrain parks makes the resort a magnet for snowboarding fans.
Carosello 3000 has something for every skier, with plenty of wide and gentle beginner slopes, but also lots of intermediate slopes. Mottolino is famous for its world-famous snowpark, which regularly hosts several major international freestyle events including the Burton European Open, the Nine Knights, the Burn River Jump and the World Rookie Fest.
Ski lessons for beginners in Livigno
In Livigno, ski lessons are available for skiers aged 3yrs. Lessons for kids are either 2hrs or 4hrs daily, adult lessons last for 2hrs. Some lesson packages have ski hire included. Groups have a maximum of 10 participants and are divided according to age and ability.
Ski schools in Livigno mostly hold their ski lessons within the Carosello 3000 area, due to the area having plenty of wide and sunny beginner slopes. Lessons start on Sundays and the ski school meeting point is either at the no.25 Tagliede ski lift or directly at the ski school office.
The first lessons focus on learning the basic moves of the snowplough and glide. These are learned at the flattest slopes within the resort and there are plenty within direct and close access from the town.
Once the first two moves have been well established, the ski schools in Livigno take their ski novices to try pistes with a slight incline. Here, lessons continue to work on the snowplough and glide, however, now the snowplough turn is also introduced.
Beginners with some previous experience are taken directly to blue slopes within the resort. The basic moves are quickly revised before more advanced techniques, such as parallel skiing, are introduced.
Kids’ ski lessons in Livigno
Ski schools in Livigno offer ski lessons to young skiers aged 3yrs and above. Lessons for kids aged 3-4yrs are held in small groups with a maximum of 5 participants and lessons last either 2hrs or for a full day (4hrs), with a lunch option. Some ski schools in Livigno offer lessons packages with ski hire included. The ski school meeting point is either directly at the ski school office or at the no.25 Tagliede ski lift.
The first lessons are very relaxed, so that the little skiers can familiarise themselves with wearing and using skis whilst beginning to learn how to glide and do the snowplough. Young skiers with previous experience are taken directly to slopes that suit their ability: Those who have skied for one week previously firstly refresh the basic techniques before focusing on snowplough turns and eventually parallel skiing.
The ski schools in Livigno take their advanced young skiers to red slopes to further improve their parallel skiing and carving techniques. There are plenty of red runs accessible from the top of the no.12 cablecar at just under 2800m.

In Livigno, night skiing is offered every Thursday between 8:30pm - 10:30pm. The meeting point is by the no.23 ski lift and access is included with every ski pass valid for for 2 days or more. Individual tickets are also available.
For cross-country skiing fans, Livigno offers 30km of cross country terrain, with areas for beginners and more technical areas for experts.
In addition to the pro’s terrain park on Mottolino, there are two further snowparks with obstacles for all freestyle abilities on the Carosello 3000; the Beach and the Cave. Also on Carosello 3000 is the Forest, which is a 100% natural freestyle area.
Located so close to Switzerland, Livigno is a “duty free” area, so all purchases are VAT free, petrol included.
