Learn to ski in Les Deux Alpes
The French ski resort Les Deux Alpes is located in the department of Isère and is a 1h car ride away from Grenoble and 2.5h away from Lyon. Les Deux Alpes, “The Two Alps” in English, is, as the name suggests, the point where the Northern and Southern Alps meet. Les Deux Alpes also happens to lie in the Massif des Écrins mountains which makes the surrounding mountainous landscape even more beautiful. The best way to enjoy the breathtaking view is on the so-called Belvédère des Écrins, a suspended aerial footbridge on the Dôme du Puy Salié (3421m). What is more, Les Deux Alpes is where you’ll find Europe’s biggest skiable glacier: the Mantel glacier, also called Mont-de-Lans glacier.
In Les Deux Alpes, vacationists can ski on the Jandri (3288m), the Tête du Diable (2868m) and the Tête Moute (2813m). Two-thirds of the resort’s slopes are green or blue which makes Les Deux Alpes the perfect destination for beginners. In fact, 5 ski lifts can take skiers from the valley to very easy slopes – the use of these lifts is free of charge.
Beginners of all ages can make their first steps into the world of skiing here. All ski schools in Les Deux Alpes usually split their students into groups of maximum 10 participants and see that all groups are homogenous, meaning that participants of each group have a similar age and skill level. The schools distinguish between kids’ lessons and lessons for teens and adults. This homogeneity makes it possible for every participant to feel comfortable and thus to easily learn the snowplough technique on green and blue slopes.
The meeting point for group lessons is right at the bottom of the pistes, near the Coolidge ski lifts, or at the ESI kids’ area. Most of the ski schools in Les Deux Alpes tell their students to be at the meeting point 10 or 15min prior to the lesson’s start.
Kids aged 4 and older can also hop on their skis, slide on the snow and learn new things. Children between the ages of 4 and 5 always make their first steps in the kids’ area used by all ski schools in Les Deux Alpes. This closed, safe and playful space is adapted to the children’s needs and offer them the best conditions for leaving their first traces in the snow. Experienced instructors, and sometimes also funny mascots, are by their side to make sure they progress safely. Instructors take older kids, aged 6 to 13, to the resort’s slopes most adequate for their level and progression.
While the ski schools in Les Deux Alpes offer ideal conditions for beginners, experienced skiers can have just as much fun. They can, for example, take up a challenge in the Freestyle Land situated on the Toura (2600m) or simply explore the resort’s red and black slopes on the Fée mountain (2200m). Vallons de la Selle is also a great playground for off-piste skiing. Some ski schools in Les Deux Alpes even offer freeride group lessons that take place there.
