Learn to ski in Lech

Situated at 1450m on the banks of the River Lech in the Austrian state of Voralberg, the ski resort of Lech may have a modest altitude but it receives up to twice as much snow as some of its French rival resorts.

Lech is c.a. 1hr away from Bregenz, 1,5hrs from Innsbruck and 2hrs from Zurich, and is part of the huge Ski Arlberg resort, which has two areas, Arlberg East and Arlberg West. Within Arlberg East are the resorts of St. Anton am Arlberg, St. Christoph am Arlberg and Stuben am Arlberg. Arlberg West encompasses the villages of Lech am Arlberg, Oberlech - which lies directly above Lech - and Zürs am Arlberg.

Fairly recently, the Arlberg West area was linked with the Warth-Schröcken ski region, resulting in Ski Arlberg becoming the largest connected ski area within Austria, with a total of 548km of pistes and more than 90 lifts.

The Lech area offers a total of 305km of pistes; 120km blue, 132km red and 27km black. The region also offers more than 200km of high alpine powder runs and the ski schools in Lech offer freestyle lessons to help skiers make the most of their off-piste adventures.

Lech lies at the foot of the Kriegerhorn mountain (2173m) with three other mountains nearby; the Rüfikopf (2362m), the Zuger Hochlicht (2377m) and the Mohnenfluh (2544m), each offering a variety of pistes at all levels.

Ski lessons for beginners in Lech

Ski schools in Lech offer private ski lessons for all ages and abilities. Private lessons ensure focused help, meaning that ski beginners can progress rapidly and successfully.

Beginners start with learning the snowplough and the glide on flat slopes within the resort. This ensures that ski novices can really focus on grasping the basics away from the main pistes and provides the optimal stress-free environment for learning to ski in Lech.

Once the first moves have been established, lessons move to slopes with a slight gradient. Ski schools in Lech use the beginner slopes close to Lech village, by the Schwarzwand, Flühen and Berghof drag lifts. The Rüfikopf lifts access further blues, over towards Stubenbach.

For beginners who want to practice after lessons, the ski schools in Lech recommend the long, blue no.38 piste, which starts at the top of the Rufikopf and is accessed directly from Lech. Intermediate skiers can try the no.38A route, which begins as a red piste but eventually joins with the no.38 blue, descending to the Trittalp chairlift base station.

Kids’ ski lessons in Lech

The ski schools in Lech offer private ski lessons to kids of all ages. Lessons are arranged either by hour, in the morning or the afternoon, or over a full day, which is generally 4- 6hrs of lessons.

First-timer lessons begin with the basics of learning how to glide and do the snowplough. The ski schools in Lech use particularly flat areas for teaching the first moves. Once these moves have been well-established, young learners are then taken to slopes with a gradient, to progress onto the next stage of learning; how to turn.

Young skiers who already have some experience are taken directly to the beginner runs above Lech; the Schlegelkopf lifts start directly in Lech and access a number of suitable blues. For intermediate skiers, the ski schools in Lech head to the area between Lech and Zürs, which has various red runs that are ideal for working on technique.
