Learn to ski in Mayrhofen

Dating back to 1511, Mayrhofen is a charming and traditional town located in the Ziller valley in Tyrol, directly in between the Penken and Ahorn mountains. The Penken is home to Austria's steepest piste, the renowned Harakiri, which has gradients up to 78%. The resort is conveniently situated only an hour’s drive away from Innsbruck and 2hrs drive from Salzburg and Munich.

Mayrhofen is part of the Zillertal skiing region, with its 535km of runs and 180 lifts. The region incorporates 7 separate areas - Fügen, Gerlos, Hintertux, Hochfügen, Kaltenbach, Königsleiten and Zell am Ziller - the Zillertaler Superskipass covering each of these areas. Mayrhofen alone has 50km of pistes, 22km being classified as easy, making the resort ideal for beginners.

Despite the resort itself being situated at an altitude of only 633m, most of the runs are found at heights between 1,650m and 2,500m, making the skiing area relatively snow sure throughout its long season. The highest pistes within the resort are found on the Penken mountain at more than 2000m.

Ski lessons for beginners in Mayrhofen

Ski lessons in Mayrhofen are offered for young skiers aged 4yrs and above. Lessons last 4hrs and beginners start with learning their first moves on the slopes - how to glide and the snowplough - before they are taken to try the easier green slopes within the resort.

Beginner slopes can be found on both mountains within the resort - the Penken and the Ahorn. Ski schools in Mayrhofen generally take their ski novices to the easy runs on the Penken, the meeting point being either at the school office or directly by the Penken beginners’ area.

After lessons, beginners can head for the slightly easier runs on the Ahorn, to practise their newly-learned techniques. These pistes are recommended by the ski schools in Mayrhofen for novice skiers who are trying slopes for their first time without an instructor: Piste no.1 is a firm favourite, offering spectacular views over the valley. Beginners skiing piste no. 4a will be accompanied by the mascot Albert Adler.

Kids’ ski lessons in Mayrhofen

Kids from age 4yrs can have children’s ski lessons in Mayrhofen. Some ski schools in Mayrhofen have their own designated “Kinderland” nursery zones, which are secured and flat slope areas with magic carpets and other child-friendly features. Other young learners start to learn the basics on the easy green runs on the Penken beginners’ area.

Once the first moves have been well established, the ski schools in Mayrhofen move their classes to the easier blue runs within the resort. Young skiers who have already reached the advanced beginners stage will find some of the blue runs on the Penken quite demanding, as the runs are slightly steeper and have more turns than other blues.

Piste no. 20 blue on the east of the mountain is a firm favourite of the ski schools in Mayrhofen and offers a long, curving trail that ends by the Horbergbahn gondola. Piste no.11 has waves, steep turns and a new snail turn at the end of the run.

The 70km of red runs means that Mayrhofen is a particularly ideal for confident intermediates. The red runs area just under the Penken Express 6 chairlift is a favourite destination for the ski schools in Mayrhofen.

How do we find our appropriate experience level?

Next to the menu item "Experience level" you will find a description of the individual experience levels. If you're still not sure, you don't need to worry. Simply choose the experience level that best suits your abilities. Before the first lesson of a group course, ski schools will assess your abilities so that you can be placed in the right group. In any case, private instructors will take your abilities into account on an individual basis.

How do we find offers including equipment?

How many participants are usually in a group?

This depends on the ski school. Some ski schools have a maximum number of participants per group. You can find this information in the descriptions of the offers.

At what age can children ski or snowboard?

There is no fixed age limit here. Supported by specially trained children's ski instructors, children can already learn to ski playfully at kindergarten age. Depending on the children's level of motoric and social development, the ideal starting age is between 4 and 5 years. Occasionally there are children who can already learn to ski at the age of 3 1/2 years.

How many days should the lessons last for our children?

During the holiday weeks, children's ski courses for beginners usually start on Sunday or Monday. The program is designed in such a way that the best learning results are achieved when your children take part in the ski course throughout the week. So they don't miss the final event (race, etc.) and experience a great week with their group. For advanced children the learning success usually kicks in on the third day.

Is it better to put our child in a group lesson or a private tuition?

The group lessons are generally recommended for beginners. Learning together with peers is more fun. The children are not constantly in the focus and have the possibility to catch their breath between the individual exercises, while the other children are on it. In order not to underchallenge highly talented children, a private ski instructor is recommended.

Can we join our child with a private instructor?

Yes, that's possible. Some providers even offer special family offers. Otherwise, you can simply book a private instructor for children or adults and inform the ski school after booking that you would like to go together.
