Learn to ski in Sierra Nevada

Located at an altitude of 2,100m within Andalusia in southeast Spain, the ski resort of Sierra Nevada takes its name from the mountain range of the same name. The resort is reached within around 50mins drive from Granada and around 2hrs drive from Malaga airport.

Sierra Nevada is the most southerly ski resort within Europe and offers 110km of pistes, with 45 blue and 53 red runs. At the heart of the resort is the village of Pradollano and the resort’s pistes are divided into 6 ski areas: Veleta, Laguna de las Yeguas, Loma Dílar, Parador y Río & Borreguiles, which is the main beginners’ area.

The skiing areas are located on the north-western slopes of the Veleta, the third highest peak in Spain (3,398m). A high altitude plus efficient snow-making facilities help ensure that Sierra Nevada has a long season, lasting from November-April.

Ski lessons for beginners in Sierra Nevada

Ski schools in Sierra Nevada offer ski lessons from age 3yrs. Group lessons last 3hrs and groups have a maximum of 8 participants. Beginner lessons generally take place in the Borreguiles area of the resort, which has plenty of beginner slopes and is directly accessible from Pradollano via the Al-Ándalus and Borreguiles gondolas. The meeting point for lessons is at the top station exit of one of the two gondolas.

First-time skiers start by learning the primary techniques of the snowplough, glide and how to brake. Once these have been well established, the ski schools in Sierra Nevada progress to slopes with more of an incline, where the snowplough turn is practised.

Beginner skiers with some previous experience are taken by the ski schools in Sierra Nevada directly to blue pistes. The focus of lessons is on optimising posture and introducing the next step techniques, such as parallel skiing.

Due to its ideal proximity to Pradollano plus its variety of green and blue slopes, the Borreguiles area is also recommended by the ski schools in Sierra Nevada as ideal for practice after lessons.

Kids’ ski lessons in Sierra Nevada

Children aged 3yrs can learn to ski in Sierra Nevada. Group lessons generally last 3hrs, although full-day options with 6hrs of lessons per day are also available. Some ski schools in Sierra Nevada offer lesson packages with equipment hire included, which is ideal for those skiing for the first time or for those who don’t have their own equipment.

Beginner lessons take place on the flat, green slopes of the Borreguiles area. The smallest learners - those aged 3-5yrs - have their first lessons on the green slope with a child-friendly magic carpet lift, by the Al-Ándalus gondola exit.

The ski schools in Sierra Nevada generally meet for lessons at the top of either the Al-Ándalus or the Borreguiles gondolas. Lessons for ski novices focus on establishing the very basic techniques of the glide, snowplough and braking. Young skiers with previous experience are taken for lessons directly to pistes that suit their ability, whether blue, red or even black.

The Veleta lift up from Borreguiles accesses various blue runs that interconnect and lead back down into Borreguiles. These provide ample opportunity for young skiers and their families to practice newly-learned techniques after lessons.

Private teachers are marked with the inscription "Private". You can search for private teachers by selecting the "Private" filter under the "Category" menu item.

How do we find offers in our language?

Under the menu item "Language" you can select a desired language. Afterwards only offers will be shown where this language is available.

When should we book?

During the holiday weeks, ski and snowboard courses are usually fully booked. In order to make sure that there is still a place available in the desired ski or snowboard course, the motto is: the sooner the better.

How do we find our appropriate experience level?

Next to the menu item "Experience level" you will find a description of the individual experience levels. If you're still not sure, you don't need to worry. Simply choose the experience level that best suits your abilities. Before the first lesson of a group course, ski schools will assess your abilities so that you can be placed in the right group. In any case, private instructors will take your abilities into account on an individual basis.

How do we find offers including equipment?

All offers including equipment are marked with the inscription "Ski rental included". If you find the inscription "Ski rental optional" you can book the equipment for this offer. You will find offers including equipment faster if you select the filter "Ski rental including" under the menu item "Popular options". In a ski resort there is almost without exception the possibility to rent winter sports equipment. If you book via CheckYeti, you will receive discounts from our partner Skiset, where you can conveniently reserve your equipment online.

How many participants are usually in a group?

This depends on the ski school. Some ski schools have a maximum number of participants per group. You can find this information in the descriptions of the offers.

At what age can children ski or snowboard?

There is no fixed age limit here. Supported by specially trained children's ski instructors, children can already learn to ski playfully at kindergarten age. Depending on the children's level of motoric and social development, the ideal starting age is between 4 and 5 years. Occasionally there are children who can already learn to ski at the age of 3 1/2 years.

How many days should the lessons last for our children?

During the holiday weeks, children's ski courses for beginners usually start on Sunday or Monday. The program is designed in such a way that the best learning results are achieved when your children take part in the ski course throughout the week. So they don't miss the final event (race, etc.) and experience a great week with their group. For advanced children the learning success usually kicks in on the third day.

Is it better to put our child in a group lesson or a private tuition?

The group lessons are generally recommended for beginners. Learning together with peers is more fun. The children are not constantly in the focus and have the possibility to catch their breath between the individual exercises, while the other children are on it. In order not to underchallenge highly talented children, a private ski instructor is recommended.

Can we join our child with a private instructor?

Yes, that's possible. Some providers even offer special family offers. Otherwise, you can simply book a private instructor for children or adults and inform the ski school after booking that you would like to go together.
