Ski Schools in Chamonix

Learn to ski in Chamonix

The ski area Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is situated in the French department of Haute-Savoie, amidst the beautiful Northern Alps. The area is especially known for housing Europe’s highest summit: the majestic Mont Blanc, reaching the incredible height of 4810m. However, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc has other natural beauties to offer, like Aiguille du Midi (3842m) and the famous Mer de Glace glacier, “Sea of Ice” in English.

The ski area is one of the oldest ski resorts in France. What is more, the village of Chamonix was the place chosen to host the very first Winter Olympics in 1924. Chamonix is also home to the ENSA headquarters, the school issuing the certificate every instructor needs in order to be able to teach at one of the ski schools in Chamonix and everywhere else in France. To make it short: Chamonix can be considered as the capital of alpine skiing.

The resort is only 1h away from Annecy and Geneva, 2h from Turin and 2.5h form Lyon. Today it is the third most frequented French resort and offers diverse experiences all around its 4 villages: Les Houches, Chamonix-Mont-Blanc – also called Chamonix Village –, Argentière and Vallorcine.

From these villages, one has access to 4 high-altitude areas. Les Houches offers a magnificent 360 panoramic view of the Mont Blanc, varied slopes and the famous World Cup run “La Verte des Houches”. The Flégère-Brévent area can be reached from Chamonix’ centre and offers a freestyle zone, a speed piste (where a speedometer tracks your speed), and the beginners’ area “Le Savoy” in the valley. Les Grands Montets (between 1235m and 3300m) is especially popular with off-piste skiers. Here, experienced skiers can discover the world’s most epic steep hillsides. Finally, the Balme-Vallorcine area whose landscape is dominated by the Tête de Balme (2250m) lies right at the Swiss border and offers numerous wide and easy slopes.

As one can note, this ski resort is highly diverse and offers the best conditions for skiers of all levels, as well as for the ski schools in Chamonix. Thanks to the terrain’s diversity, the local schools can always find the perfect playground for students of different ages and levels of experience. Even though Chamonix is known for being a challenging ski area, you can find beginners’ zones all across the ski area. Numerous easy slopes can also be found here, especially on the Prarion or in the Lognan (1972m) zone.

Generally, ski schools in Chamonix ask the beginners to meet their instructor approximately 10min before the start of the lesson. The meeting point is either at the kids’ zone in Argentière, at the bottom of the drag lift in Vormaine or in the Savoy beginners’ area, right at the bottom of the Plan Praz gondola.

Some ski schools in Chamonix offer kids’ ski lessons for children from the age of 3. In the kids’ zone, the youngest skiers get used to their equipment as well as to the snow through playful activities organised and hosted by experienced ski instructors. Once the kids feel comfortable, nothing else can hold them back from getting on their skis and making their first turns using the snowplough technique.

Kids aged 5 and older, whatever their level of experience is, follow their instructor onto the resort’s slopes matching their skills. In order to allow fast progress and a lively atmosphere, the ski schools in Chamonix see that each group has no more than 8 skiers of similar age and level.

That’s special about ski lessons in Chamonix

The majority of the ski schools in Chamonix offer their lessons in English and French, some even in Spanish and Italian. In order to make the stay of vacationists even nicer, a free shuttle bus, the Chamonix Bus, connects all resort villages with one another.

A few ski schools in Chamonix offer the so-called “Vallée Blanche” day to experienced skiers. This adventure includes a guided 20km-long off-piste hike on the Mer de Glace glacier. During this unique experience, participants discover the area between the Aiguille du Midi mountain and Chamonix, and hike through a total height difference of 2000m.

The Aiguille du Midi is an absolute must-see in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. In fact, the world’s highest museum can be found on this mountain at a height of 3777m. The museum is dedicated to all Mont Blanc adventurers. In this unique place, adrenaline junkies can try taking a “step into the void” in a glass cube off a mountain cliff - nothing for the fainthearted.
