Learn to ski in Kitzbühel

With its medieval buttressed old city walls and finely-painted frescoes, Kitzbühel rightly deserves its reputation as being the most beautiful ski town in Europe and currently holds the award “Best ski resort in Austria”. Located in the heart of the Kitzbüheler Alps, Kitzbühel is only 1hr from Innsbruck and 1.5hrs away from Munich & Salzburg.

The resort is part of the huge ski alliance KitzSki, which includes the ski resorts Kirchberg, Jochberg, Aurach, Mittersill, Reith bei Kitzbühel, Aschau and Pass Thurn and is known worldwide as host to the Hahnenkamm Alpine Ski World Cup. Here, the world’s best skiers face the challenges of the notorious “Streif” piste, reaching speeds of up to 140km/hr and tackling the 85% gradient Mausefalle (Mousetrap) jump, which launches racers 80m into the air.

Kitzbühel has 215km of slopes including 36km of ungroomed ski pistes. The resort spans three separate ski sectors; the Hahnenkamm, the Kitzbüheler Horn and neighbouring Bichlalm, which all feature perfectly groomed pistes. The slopes around the Hahnenkamm are a favourite of the ski schools in Kitzbühel, as the area has pistes for all levels and is ideal for lessons for beginner to advanced.

Ski lessons for beginners in Kitzbühel

With 102 km (54%) of slopes being rated blue, it’s easy to see why Kitzbühel is the ideal resort to learn to ski. Ski schools in Kitzbühel offer lessons from the age of 3yrs, lesson groups having a maximum of 6 participants and being organised according to ability.

The meeting points for the ski schools in Kitzbühel is either at the base station of the Gansler lift, next to the Rasmushof hotel, or at the beginner slopes near the Hahnenkammbahn base station. Both areas have a wide choice regarding easy slopes and additionally the lifts in the valley areas can be used for free.

Ski beginners start with learning the basic techniques of the glide and snowplough on the flattest slopes within the resort. Once these are well-established, lessons graduate to slopes with a slight gradient and turns are introduced; firstly simple snowplough turns and later parallel turns.

In Kitzbühel, there is even a beginner slope named “Ministreif” after its big-brother counterpart, so beginners returning from their skiing holiday can proudly claim they have personally skied the “Streif” piste.

Kids’ ski lessons in Kitzbühel

Children from the age of 3yrs are welcomed at the ski schools in Kitzbühel. Lessons generally last for 4hrs/day, although very young skiers can choose lessons for 2hrs/day. Being the home of ski racing, some ski schools in Kitzbühel even offer ski racing camps for kids from 12yrs. Group lessons have no more than 6 participants, to ensure that each ski novice receives focused and individual help during lessons.

The youngest skiers begin to learn the basics at one of the Kindergarten zones within the resort. These are secure, with flat slopes and magic carpets, and provide the ideal stress-free environment for little learners.

Slightly older ski novices are taken by the ski schools in Kitzbühel to one of the beginners areas within the resort: The Rasmusleiten lies close to Kitzbühel village and has several easy runs. Additionally, the area between the Hahnenkamm and Pengelstein has plenty of blues and greens that are ideal confidence-builders for first-time skiers.

Young intermediate skiers work on improving their general technique and parallel turns. For this, the ski schools in Kitzbühel again head up to the Hahnenkamm which offers various reds, including one that includes a section of the famous Streif racing piste. Kitzbühel has a total of 66km (35%) of red runs and so intermediate skiers have plenty of scope to practice their parallel turns.

When should we book?

During the holiday weeks, ski and snowboard courses are usually fully booked. In order to make sure that there is still a place available in the desired ski or snowboard course, the motto is: the sooner the better.

How do we find our appropriate experience level?

Next to the menu item "Experience level" you will find a description of the individual experience levels. If you're still not sure, you don't need to worry. In any case, private instructors will take your abilities into account on an individual basis.

At what age can children ski or snowboard?

There is no fixed age limit here. Supported by specially trained children's ski instructors, children can already learn to ski playfully at kindergarten age. Depending on the children's level of motoric and social development, the ideal starting age is between 4 and 5 years. Occasionally there are children who can already learn to ski at the age of 3 1/2 years.

How many days should the lessons last for our children?

During the holiday weeks, children's ski courses for beginners usually start on Sunday or Monday. The program is designed in such a way that the best learning results are achieved when your children take part in the ski course throughout the week. So they don't miss the final event (race, etc.) and experience a great week with their group. For advanced children the learning success usually kicks in on the third day.

Is it better to put our child in a group lesson or a private tuition?

The group lessons are generally recommended for beginners. Learning together with peers is more fun. The children are not constantly in the focus and have the possibility to catch their breath between the individual exercises, while the other children are on it. In order not to underchallenge highly talented children, a private ski instructor is recommended.

Can we join our child with a private instructor?

Yes, that's possible. Some providers even offer special family offers. Otherwise, you can simply book a private instructor for children or adults and inform the ski school after booking that you would like to go together.
