Learn to ski in Flaine

The ski resort Flaine is located in the French department Haute-Savoie, just between Geneva and the world-famous Mont Blanc. Together with the resorts of Samoëns, Morillon, Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval and Les Carroz d’Arâches, Flaine represents one of the biggest ski areas in France: Le Grand Massif. Nested in a natural mountainous amphitheatre on 1600m in altitude, Flaine is the area’s highest resort. Majestic mountains like Tête Pelouse (2474m), Grandes Platières (2480m) and Tête des Lindars (2561m) surround the ski schools in Flaine. From these summits, one can enjoy the breathtaking landscape dominated by the Mont Blanc and the Aiguille du Midi.

A car-free resort with remarkable architecture awaits vacationists here. The ski schools in Flaine are only 1,5h away from Geneva and Annecy, and a 2,5h-long car ride from Montreux. The buildings and houses in Flaine were built in the 60s by the architect Marcel Breuer. He built it with the goal to create environmentally friendly and respectful architecture. Today, Flaine is the only French resort being listed in the French Historical Monuments Inventory.

First-timers and beginners can enjoy the local green slopes, very easy runs, situated at the base of the mountains. These slopes offer perfect conditions for making first snowplough turns with the help of one of the ski schools in Flaine. Skiers have access to green slopes through 4 ski lifts of free use: the Pré chairlift, the Bissac drag lift and rope tow and the Flaine Forum open-air gondola. Usually, the meeting point for beginners’ lessons is at the mountain station of the Flaine Forêt drag lift.

More experienced kids can discover the upper part of the mountains where they’ll find blue and red slopes. There, skiers find perfect conditions to learn parallel turns and even carving. The basics of freeriding can also be learned in these areas.

Children from the age of 4 can participate in high-quality lessons offered by the ski schools in Flaine. The children are split into groups of maximum 9 skiers, each of the group members having a similar level of experience and age. A professional instructor supervises the little skiers and makes sure the kids learn in a playful atmosphere and a safe environment.

Beginners and children aren’t the only ones who can enjoy Flaine to the fullest: the resort is also known to be a true powder snow paradise. Experienced skiers can discover the local snowpark and so-called “fun zones” that respond perfectly well to the needs of all skiers.

The summit of Les Grandes Platières offers you a 360° panoramic view where you not only get to contemplate the region’s beauty but also the famous Mont Blanc. From this place, beginners mastering basic skiing techniques can slide down the blue run “Piste des Cascades”. The piste is 14km long and certainly worth the slide for skiers of every level.

Private teachers are marked with the inscription "Private". You can search for private teachers by selecting the "Private" filter under the "Category" menu item.

How do we find offers in our language?

When should we book?

During the holiday weeks, ski and snowboard courses are usually fully booked. In order to make sure that there is still a place available in the desired ski or snowboard course, the motto is: the sooner the better.

How do we find our appropriate experience level?

Next to the menu item "Experience level" you will find a description of the individual experience levels. If you're still not sure, you don't need to worry. Simply choose the experience level that best suits your abilities. Before the first lesson of a group course, ski schools will assess your abilities so that you can be placed in the right group. In any case, private instructors will take your abilities into account on an individual basis.

How do we find offers including equipment?

At what age can children ski or snowboard?

There is no fixed age limit here. Supported by specially trained children's ski instructors, children can already learn to ski playfully at kindergarten age. Depending on the children's level of motoric and social development, the ideal starting age is between 4 and 5 years. Occasionally there are children who can already learn to ski at the age of 3 1/2 years.

How many days should the lessons last for our children?

During the holiday weeks, children's ski courses for beginners usually start on Sunday or Monday. The program is designed in such a way that the best learning results are achieved when your children take part in the ski course throughout the week. So they don't miss the final event (race, etc.) and experience a great week with their group. For advanced children the learning success usually kicks in on the third day.

Is it better to put our child in a group lesson or a private tuition?

The group lessons are generally recommended for beginners. Learning together with peers is more fun. The children are not constantly in the focus and have the possibility to catch their breath between the individual exercises, while the other children are on it. In order not to underchallenge highly talented children, a private ski instructor is recommended.

Can we join our child with a private instructor?

Yes, that's possible. Some providers even offer special family offers. Otherwise, you can simply book a private instructor for children or adults and inform the ski school after booking that you would like to go together.
