What to Expect

Discover Etna’s open-air museum of Valle del Bove with our guided hiking tour! From the meeting point at Rifugio Sapienza, we will embark on the trail of Schiena dell’Asino, winding along the southern side of Etna, leading us to the breathtaking Valle del Bove. As we begin our ascent, we will pass through a large, serene Larch Pine Forest, experiencing a 250-metre uphill level difference, perfect for warming up our legs and senses.

Along the trail, admire the dense vegetation, including vibrant milkvetch, the cheerful yellow blooms of barberry, and the fragrant tansy, which flourish in spring. Reaching a picturesque plateau, you will be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the city of Catania and on the Ionic Sea. This visual feast is a perfect spot to pause and soak in the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Continuing on, the hike takes us to the heart of Valle del Bove, where you can witness the raw power of Etna’s recent volcanic eruptions. This valley, an open-air museum of Etna, serves as a natural embankment against the eruptions, offering a unique glimpse into the geological wonders of the area. Throughout the trek, you will be accompanied by an expert volcanological or alpine guide, ensuring your safety and enriching your understanding of this extraordinary landscape. Suitable for everyone and requiring no special equipment, this three-hour adventure promises unforgettable moments and breathtaking views.

• Meeting place: At our Info Point in Esagonal, in the Piazzale del Rifugio Sapienza Etna Sud.

• Meeting time: 15 minutes before the start of the activity

• Car Parks: paid and free car parks nearby
