    Avoriaz is situated at an altitude of 1800m and lies right at the heart of the huge Portes du Soleil ski area in the Haute-Savoie region of France. Geneva airport is only 85km away, with road transfers to the resort taking around 1,5hrs. Despite its ideal location, Avoriaz only officially became a ski resort in December 1962. Since then, the resort has developed to become the stylish and popular ski-in/ski-out resort that it is today, with distinctive red-cedar buildings and charming horse-drawn sleigh transportation.

    Avoriaz has a total of 130km of skiable area with 51 runs at all levels. With 54% of slopes being green or blue, the resort is ideal for beginners. The Portes du Soleil area is the second largest ski resort in the world and extends over 14 valleys. Skiers who have the Portes du Soleil ski pass can make the most of the region's 650km of runs, around 80% of them being blue or red.

    There are two main types of ski pass available in Avoriaz: The Portes du Soleil Ski Pass covers the area from Morzine & Les Gets across to the Swiss resorts of Champéry & Morgins. The Avoriaz Ski Pass is only for Avoriaz, but also includes the Super Morzine, Ardent & Prodains lifts. Both ski passes require a hand-free card.

    Avoriaz has a total of 29 beginner runs. Ski schools in Avoriaz take first-time skiers to the Ecoles or Dromonts pistes in the centre of the resort, both of which are serviced by two easy drag lifts. Beginner lessons focus on basic techniques; proper balance on skis, gliding downhill and the snowplough. In the next step, ski schools in Avoriaz then take their beginners to practice on the three green pistes nearby, which are accessed by the Proclou, Seraussaix and Baron chairlifts. Four gentle blue pistes in the same area are ideal for advanced beginners; Proclou, Seraussaix, Qu’mont and Gernues.

    For advanced beginners who want to try other slopes within the region, the Portes du Soleil ski pass gives access to a total of 34 green and 119 blue runs.

Lessons last between 2-5hrs, whereby the groups have a headcount of between 8-12 children and are organised according to age and ability.     Village des Enfants

    Created by the Olympic ski medallist Annie Famose, Village des Enfants ski school in Avoriaz has a specially designed area featuring gentle pistes with slides and bumps, mini tracks, coloured runs and small jumps. Situated right in the centre of Avoriaz Village, lessons are held in the mornings and afternoons and the school also offers various après ski activities.
